My son is an A student taking mostly AP and honors classes. He’s considering Endicott, Syracuse and UMass Amherst for Sports Management. Any opinions or advice?
They are all fine schools, but Endicott is quite different than UMass or Syracuse. Has he visited all three?
First, Sports Management as a major isn’t necessary for him to work in the world of sports. It’s more useful to choose a college that either has a D1 team or is located in a city with professional sports, and to major in statistics or business, then position yourself with internships and networking.
Babson would be a great choice for an A student.
Endicott is too low-ranked and won’t challenge him.
Syracuse’s business school is first-class and its teams will provide excellent chances of internships.
UMass, same thing, especially if he can get into the Honors College.
What about Northeastern? Villanova? any SEC school? Penn State Smeal?
Run te NPCs because these may not be affordable.
Temple? UAlabama? Those two offer nice automatic merit scholarships if your son has 1400 CR+M.
UMass Amherst has one of the top graduate sports management programs in the world (#4 worldwide in 2014). It is run out of the business school. You have to apply for it separately and it is hard to get into. (I believe you can also transfer in later if you have a high enough GPA).
I would be very careful about choosing a school where the sports management program is not run out of the business school.

Babson is great “business LAC” with some ties to the world of sports.
UMass Sports Management is legit, as is Syracuse’s.
I just wanted to point out that OP’s son doesn’t need to restrict himself to colleges with an explicit “sports management major”.
He’s just starting his search. He visited Syracuse and loved it. We will be visiting UMass and Endicott in the next few weeks. I don’t know much about Endicott but have reservations like the lower ranking that MYOS1634 mentioned.
Thanks so much for the input! We are trying to figure out if a business major with a sports minor would give him better options as far as career choices. Especially if he decides to go on to pursue a law degree. In a perfect world he would love to eventually become a sports agent. He does know he definitely wants to be involved in the sports industry.
Why would an A student like UMass? Are you instate or OOS?
^ Why wouldn’t he consider UMass? It’s increasingly competitive, it’s part of the 5 college consortium, and has great resources and opportunities. The honors program is very highly rated.
We’re OOS. I’ve actually heard good things about it and they are supposed to have a good sports management program. It seems as though they have good sports internships. We haven’t visited yet, so we’ll see if he likes it. Why would you be so surprised he may like it?
We are trying to find a good school with a strong, business based sports management or sports studies major with good internship opportunities. Or - a good school with strong business majors with a good sports minor - again with good internship opportunities.
I also should have added that we live in CT and he’d like to stay within a reasonable car ride (preferably under 5 or 6 hours)
@mamaedefamilia @ajdmom because no OOS with 3.75+ are going to seriously consider a state flagship that is the automatic safety for its own instate students. More people end up at UMass than those who willingly choose it. He should look elsewhere.
@LBad96 Respectfully, I disagree. Admission standards at UMass-Amherst have been rising steadily, including for its honors program. When we visited over the summer, we were told by an admissions officer that average incoming GPA has now risen to 3.8 and for honors, it’s above a 4. It may have once been an “automatic safety” for MA residents, but no longer.
It is also a very good value, tuition-wise, even for OOS students where the COA was around $42K, the last time that I checked. That’s a good 10-12K less than many flagship public universities. The amount of construction that we saw suggests that it’s not strapped for funding. It has an amazing library, great science facilities, and offers diverse academic programs, as well as being part of the 5 college consortium, and in a lovely area. And great food!
@LBad96: Your other threads indicate that you were denied at Mass-Amherst. It hasn’t been fair to comment unfavorably on the school here without disclosing that.
I agree, LBad96 seems to be unnecessarily harsh in your judgement of UMASS. I actually have a few friends whose kids already attend there and they are happy with it. (also OOS) I’ll keep an open mind until we visit. One thing that seems to be widely known is that UMASS has a well respected sports management program.
That being said, since reading MYOS1624 comments we have broadened our search a bit to include more schools offering business majors - not necessarily strictly a sports major.
Can’t understand why they would pay more to attend UMass over UConn–especially with UConn NCAA champs last year! Syracuse is outstanding but not worth the price difference for a Connecticut resident
I guess I should tell my friends that attend Umass Amherst that got in with a 2200+ SAT, 32+ ACT, and 3.9+ GPA and are working their behinds off while having the times of their lives in the Commonwealth Honors College that they’re attending a school that’s beneath them!
Umass Amherst is an excellent choice for an A student who’s interested in one of their tippy-top programs, like sports management, or CS, which is world class. It is not the zoo-mass of days past. @LBad96, it’s time to move on from that rejection, buddy. It comes across as petty and very childish.
@Qwerty568 cool story. Honestly, I just want to see UNCW crush UMass in sports (which they would do for virtually every sport except hockey and football, the latter of which my school doesn’t have). It low key annoys me that they don’t play each other lol.
I’m going to make sure that they regret ever denying me, I can assure you of that.
Yeah, I’m sure regret is the exact word that would come to mind if an adcom from Umass read your current posts.
Regardless, OP, I’m with agreement with some other posters here- Endicott would not present a challenge and Umass is a better safety. Babson is a good suggestion.
@Qwerty568 I really couldn’t care less to be honest. I don’t need validation or approval from those arrogant, campus informant-permitting Massholes. I’m going to be successful without their help, and I’m at the perfect university to do so. Clearly you didn’t read that at all properly.
