My daughter will be in Boston for college and needs to see an endocrinologist for hypothyroidism. She has a subclinical diagnosis, with all the symptoms, so she needs a dr that will work with her symptoms, not just her labs. I posted about this issue last June and she has had labs done twice since then, by two different doctors. We have not been able to get her help locally, all they do is order more tests and tell us she is within normal range. In the mean time, she has all the symptoms, enlarged thyroid, weight gain, hair loss, cold intolerance, dry skin, heart issues and has had them for 8 years, when they began testing her. I am sure she has a thyroid problem and we are hoping to find a doctor in Boston that can help her.

Fishy,
I am so sorry to hear this has been going on for 8 years. While I have no knowledge of specific care in Boston, I want to encourage you to continue on this track. She probably does have Hypo. Please be sure to look also into PCOS, which can result from neglected Hypo (related weight gain, etc.). A good endo will look at her entire endocrine system. Best of luck- there are sure to be excellent endos in the Boston area.

Well, with a diagnosis like that, it’s actually a good thing she’s going to school in Boston, which has some of the finest medical facilities and schools in the world. And that’s coming from someone who grew up in Houston.

Just do some research on the endocrinologists at the major hospitals there and start from there.

Thanks for the replies. She got new labs back today and results are the same. I was able to get her an appointment with a Dr in Boston the first week she is there, so I am hopeful this will get things moving in the right direction.

Hi fishymom, my D also has hypothyroidism and goes to school in Boston … she was border line normal/hypo and if the doctors just looked at my daughter’s numbers, they would not have put her on the generic Synthroid when they did, but since I also have hypothyroidism, and my grandparents did, too, they decided to treat her. I have to say it was the best thing for her. Her energy came back, she stopped sleeping with sweats and a hoodie, and I would also say her cheerful personality came back, too. I’d be curious what practice you go to … for now I have my daughter go to a health clinic in Boston, and they take samples to send her labs back to her original doc at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, but it sounds like you don’t yet have a home base doctors. I’d be curious on your D’s numbers if you want to PM me (TSH, T3, T4 for example, and also her Vitamin D levels).

Thanks Snowflake, sent you a pm!
