Eng Lang - "Infer..." Questions

CliffsAP English Language & Composition book says that for questions that say “infer blah blah blah” the correct answer will NOT be stated directly in the passage, because that is NOT an inference.

However, on the SAT, even if a question asks you to infer something, it will be stated directly in the passage (you’ve just got to find it). This way, the CollegeBoard does not discriminate against the fact that different people may infer a work differently.

I’m wondering if it’s the same way on the Eng Lang AP exam as on the SAT. Do you really have to infer, or does the passage actively state the correct answer?

The scorers aren’t going to mark you down for interpreting something differently them then, as long as you give good support for why you interpreted it that way. The AP test is at a higher level of thinking than the SAT, so they want to see that your can think at a higher level, so they let you do the infering.

Yes, but what about the multiple choice section? It is the CB that provides inferences, and you must choose what they consider to be a correct inference.

Most MC questions that ask you to infer something will say something along the lines of “choose the best answer.” When it says that, you go with the answer with the most evidence from the passage.
