I will be graduating with a B.S. in Biology. I hate Biology and was only in it because I initially was interested in med school, but then realized I was only into med school for the wrong reasons. I’ve always been interested in engineering ever since I was a kid, so I decided to take the hard path to becoming an engineer. I have taken up to what would be equivalent to sophomore level of mechanical engineering courses. I plan on taking more classes in order to pursue a masters in Mechanical Engineering. I would really like to apply for an internship/co-op in engineering in the fall in order to gain more experience. How do I go about trying to obtain an internship because I feel like most companies would see me major and automatically not consider me even though I’ve taken a good amount of engineer courses and I have a lot of general work experience.
List your MechE courses on your resume and talk them up to recruiters.
Would biology put you in a better position to do a biotechnology or bioengineering internship perhaps? I know it’s not the same as mechE but if you’re better qualified it would still be great to have on your resume.
I’m saying the above with a limited amount of knowledge btw, but I figured bio might be good for biotech/BEng.
Talk to career services at your school and ask about how they place Soph engineers for internships to see if they have any help. It can be difficult for even engineering students who are just at the Soph level to get an internship.
