Engineering at UF

Engineering Technology vs computer Engineering. Why most universities have computer engineering but not Engineering Technology. UF does not offer that. What is the closest to Engineering Technology?

Engineering technology is a less “demanding” program, and is usually not offered by universities that have large engineering programs.

Engineering technology education is more applied than the more theoretical science-based engineering degree education.

(from wiki)

Here are some of the ways they differ:

Engineering undergraduate programs include more mathematics work and higher-level mathematics than technology programs.

Engineering undergraduate programs often focus on theory, while technology programs usually focus on application.

Once they enter the workforce, engineering graduates typically spend their time planning, while engineering technology graduates spend their time making plans work.

At ABET, engineering and engineering technology programs are evaluated and accredited by two separate accreditation commissions using two separate sets of accreditation criteria.

Graduates from engineering programs are called “engineers,” while graduates of technology programs are called “technologists.”

Some U.S. state boards of professional engineering licensure will allow only graduates of engineering programs—not engineering technology programs—to become licensed engineers.

Engineers generally operate in conceptual design and product development, while technologists generally work in testing, construction, or field work.

Here’s the curriculum(at FAMU) for Electronic Engineering Technology (Computer Option):

<a href=“Page Not Found”>http://www.famu.edu/ElectronicEngineeringTechnology/UserFiles/File/Electronic%20Engineering%20Technology%20(Computer%20Option).pdf

You’ll notice the heavy focus on labs, and that the only core math is up to Calc 2 and Statistics.

You may be thinking of Computer Science(CSE or CSC) vs. Computer Engineering(CEN). UF does have a two computer science programs, one under the college of engineering(CSE) and the other is under the College of liberal Arts and Sciences (CSC). Even the CSC degree has far more math and “theory” than the engineering technology program. The CSC program is on par with the “engineering” programs.

I thought engineering technology would be a more prestigious title than computer engi, at least it sound like it. i guess i was wrong. thanks a lot…
