Engineering Businesses

I have been thinking around what I’ll do after I hope to get my B.S. in industrial engineering degree. I have heard of things like 5 or more years in the field and then getting an MBA. But I wondering what it takes to start an engineering business if anyone’s ever done that?

My husband and I met in graduate school. We worked as engineers for other companies for 13 years, then started our own firm. We are structural engineers. The main things you need are experience and advice! A good accountant and lawyer are mandatory. And you need to have lots of contacts who will help you get business quickly. We’ve been in business for 17 years now. It’s not always easy, but it’s SO much better than working for somebody else.

Make sure you work quite a few years to get enough experience before you try to go out on your own.
