Engineering Calculus I

I am a freshman in the Engineering College at USF. Does anyone know why I have to take Engineering Calculus I when I passed the AP Calculus Exam with a score of 5? I went to class today and I will be relearning everything I learned last year!

You should go see your academic adviser right away to make sure you are in right math class. It’s going to be busy with classes just starting, but you need to be sure you are in right class. The adviser should be able to give explanation of why USF wants you to take engineering calc I, even though you passed AP exam with the 5, if that is the policy. Too, ask your professor if you are in appropriate math course. Good Luck! As smart as you are at math, you should be able to figure all this out without a problem!

Thanks for the response. I’ll go see my counselor tomorrow.

My son is interested in USF for engineering, possibly mechanical or aerospace. Any comments on either of the programs would be helpful. We are OOS. How about job possibilities after graduation?

I am not a student in the engineering college. My roommate is a student in the USF College of Engineering and I know she is quite pleased with the program (she studies a lot!) Hopefully some USF engineering students will check in here and comment on the USF engineering programs.

I remember at my freshman orientation session last year, all beginning freshmen (including honors students) were encouraged to enroll in a “university experience” 2 semester hr. class that familiarized new college students with “the ropes” of college life—all, except for the engineering freshmen. The engineering freshmen were told they wouldn’t have enough time for the course because they needed to get busy concentrating on engineering. The engineering students were expected to immediately “roll up their sleeves” and get up to their elbows in their engineering preparation and studies. The USF Engineering College is all business and I am sure it provides students with the solid foundation needed to reach career goals and succeed and accomplish without limit.

Sorry, I can’t promise your son a job! USF is on the west end of the Florida I-4 business/technology corridor that runs east thru Orlando and continues toward Cape Canaveral/Daytona Bch.

Thanks for the comments. I really cannot find too many folks on this website or other sites to comment about the quality of the engineering dept. I know it is not high up in the rankings but i also know how flawed those rankings can be.
