Engineering Degree Choice Help

From many people throughout my senior year in high school, I have heard countless times about the flexibility of certain degrees within engineering. I go to a public high school in Michigan, and I am almost certain that I will want to either pursue a degree in BME, ME, or EE. There are many reasons to this:

BME: current health care reform status, aging of the people of the baby boom era, my studies in AP Bio and my interests with biology, etc.

ME: father obtained ME degree at UMich, very interesting and successful life as a mechanical engineer.

EE: Everything is electronic, high interests in the physics of electricity, etc.

As you can see, my reasonings are quite shallow. With this post, I am aiming to further distinguish each major and see what I really want to puruse when going into an engineering school. I’ve heard countless times that ME and EE degrees are very flexible, while the BME major is still fairly new and is very specific.

you don’t have to declare an engineering major till the end of your freshman year, normally during your freshman year, there will be tours of the engineering departments/other options to help you decide on a field so don’t worry about it right now. Maybe an introductory chemistry or physics class will help you decide which way you want to go.

You don’t even have to major if engineering to be an engineer. The only real important reason to major in engineering is because you have some engineering grad schools that won’t accept you into a program JUST BECAUSE your degree did not have the word “engineering” in the diploma.

Math and Physics majors become engineers also.

Google each discipline and read about what each ones does. Pick up the undergraduate annoucements and read course discriptions. Then try and find what appeals to you most. That would be easy for me, since I hate circuits and I am not a big fan of biology.

Try and find what interests you. If you can do that, everything else will work itself out.
