I am a high schooler going into my junior year, and I am thinking about what I would like to do in college and as a career. I took both bio and chem this year - chem was my favorite subject, and I absolutely loved everything about it. It was extremely cool. However, I HATED bio. I’ve never hated a class more.
Chem and math (Algebra II) were my best subjects. I carried 98s for the year in both, and found them naturally easy for me. I realized engineering would be a field that would definitely correlate to my own natural talents.
I think civil engineering, especially structural, sounds very cool. But, are there a lot of environmental concepts tied up in it? I know colleges sometimes have only “civil and environmental” degrees (like MIT for instance) which I would avoid at all costs since environment = biology. I have also thought about chemical engineering, but would biological principals be present in that as well?
I’m taking physics next year so I’m sure I’ll have a more clear direction. However, if any of you have insight into these two fields specifically as well as other little-biology engineering fields, that would be great.
*sorry if I offended anyone with my hatred of biology. I think part of the reason was my mysogynistic teacher, and another part was that the material just did not interest me. And, the class and subject in general was and is very much based on rote memorization, which I dislike immensely. I’d much rather apply and solve things.
Bump
Not sure if I’m breaking any rules posting this late, but I was/am in the exact same situation you are in. Detested Biology, but loved physics and math. I’m not sure if this applies to every college, but my Electrical Engineering curriculum has no biology whatsoever.
In the long run, however, it mostly depends on what you’re interested in and if you’re willing to suffer for a semester or 2 for it. If there’s an engineering field you absolutely love but it has some biology, it might be better to suffer through a semester or two of biology… Just my 2 cents though.
Mechanical engineering, computer science, and electrical engineering should require no biology. My CS degree didn’t even require chem, just physics.
@usedtaco21 @“Keasbey Nights” Nights" thanks! I’m very interested in civil engineering (concentrating on structural though) but computer science and electrical also seem interesting. I guess I’ll have to decide for sure within the next year. I might try to get an internship to see what I like
