Engineering GPA

Seeing as how engineering majors don’t need to finish IGETC or any real GEs for admission purposes (though you do have to complete them for graduation), do the admissions people really only look at your MAJOR GPA? I ask because I’m taking a few classes this semester (accounting, econ, and psychology) so that I can get a small insurance GPA boost in the event that I get anything lower than an ‘A’ in my difficult major courses.

I’m primarily looking at UC Berkeley and UCLA.

I have some questions, arent u majoring in compsci? Says your name. 2nd, What does econ, accounting, have to do w/ engineering prereqs? Lastly, YES YES YES major prepreq GPA is SO IMPORTANT in admissions i cant even emphasize it enough.

I’m applying to EECS at Berkeley, which is in the College of Engineering.

Like I said, econ, accounting, and psychology is for that insurance GPA boost in the event that I get anything less than an ‘A’ in a major prereq. It also helps that econ and psychology fulfill some of the GE graduation requirements for Berkeley and LA.

And yes, I know major GPA is important but that was not my question. I’m asking if it really is the ONLY thing that counts since there is no IGETC or GEs to be finished for the purpose of admission. Basically, am I wasting my time by taking these classes if they don’t really help the GPA that they look at. OK, MAYBE I’m just wasting my time with accounting since it doesn’t fulfill a GE, but an ‘A’ in that 5 unit class might help me down the road.

Yes there are GE’s… You have to do your 7 breadth requirement, and EECS is a HIGHLY selective major, so it is VERY hard to get in. I think it was a 3.8 average that got in with all finished prereqs. Yeah theres the 7 Breadth requirement courses you must take. And dont forget your EC’s and personal statement. You gotta kick ass with your personal statements because that is your “tiebreaker” if ppl have the same GPA as you. So in my opinionated rank. I’d say,

 1. Major prereq GPA
 2. GE GPA (7 course UC Requirement)
 3. Personal Statement
 4. EC’s

Well on the articulation agreement it just says you need to complete 6 courses, 2 of which are English courses and the other four being humanities/social science courses of your choice. It also stated that it’s NOT a factor in admissions and that I can finish it at Berkeley to graduate. I agree though that the personal statement will be pretty huge if I’m on the borderline (as the articulation agreement says too).

Are you applying to Computer Science or EECS?

My main goal is EECS, but if my GPA isnt good enough, Im gonna apply to the CS (L&S) at cal. What was your source of how they dont count the "6 course articulation?) by the way there is 7, u are missing the quatitive reasoning which is a math course. Anyways Im pretty sure that the articulation GPA is counted towards transfer, unless you can show me your source to convince me.
