ENGINEERING GURUS - Help!

Hey Guys,

I really appreciate you helping me out. I’m a senior studying in a private boarding school in Sydney, Australia - but I’m an international boarder from Singapore (I know right)…and now I’m hoping to come to the US to study Mechanical/Civil Engineering.

These are my ‘stats’

[ b]Objective:**
SAT I (breakdown): 2300 (780M, 740CR, 780W)
SAT II (place score in parentheses): World History 670 and taking Math 2 in June
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): school doesn’t do this
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): school ranks by subject - basically in the top 10 for all (out of approx 80 - fluctuates from subject to subject)
Senior Year Course Load: Mathematics, Extension 1 Mathematics (both Maths calculus based), Engineering Studies, Modern History (Germany), Economics, English

[ b]Subjective:**
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses):House Monitor (of my boarding house, do duties, mark rolls, call house meetings etc), Rugby (1 state championship, 1 ‘city/metropolitan’ championship, played for school since 5th grade, inter-state rugby tour), Athletics Team (shot put 3rd, but our school won the point score --> championship & part of the team since 2013)
Job/Work Experience: 1 week at Engineering Company (plan to talk alot about this - made me choose mechanical because I was fortunate enough to see how they designed their machines on solidworks, sat in all their meetings from design to marketing and eventually went down to the contractor’s factory where a unit was getting assembled)
Volunteer/Community Service: 3 hours/week for 1 year at Aged Care Facility, set up initiative to raise funds for a ‘sponsor child’ by selling food in the yard, worked for a week at a Child Care Center (8 hours/day), went on a 2 week long Aboriginal Australian Cultural Immersion (learned about their culture by staying at their traditional ‘homelands’, did some service work), Economics Society (not the founder, but first ever subject society), Chess Club & ‘Richard Yeend Chess Competition’

[ b]Other**
Applied for Financial Aid?: no
State (if domestic applicant):
Country (if international applicant): Australia/Singapore
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: fortunate enough where fees will not be an issue
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First Generation college student

Schools I’m Applying to:

  • University of Michigan Ann Arbor
  • UC Berkeley
  • UCLA
  • Stanford
  • UW Madison
  • Purdue
  • Princeton; basically I’m just going to throw an application to all the Ivies; I know that not all are good at engineering but you know the drill - asian parents etc.
  • Upenn (only exception where I’m applying to business)
  • Vanderbilt
  • USC
  • Georgia Tech

NOTE: I know how hard it is to get into every single one of those schools, which is why I’ve turned to the well informed people of college confidential to help me. I know that nobody can say exactly what’s gonna happen - but is it likely that i’ll be rejected from every single school on this list?

Thanks for the help guys!

There are all reaches except perhaps for Purdue!

@uclaparent9 what must i do to improve my chances? what are the departments im lacking in from your point if view?

The problem is lack of clearity on your accademics and no significant ECs. Being a top 10 (assuming 10th ?) out of 80 is not a great ranking either!

@uclaparent9 oh i see. I go to a great school, and in Australia your final mark is actually the percentile of people you beat in the state. i dont think you’ll understand but since its a year’s worth of work considered in getting that score, scaled across different schools and subjects etc, its obviously exponentially harder than the SAT. I am however, projected to get above 95 - the max being 99.95.
