Engineering Interships/Job Prospects

I got a likely letter for Cornell Engineering, and I’m super excited about it, although I recognize that its very expensive and my family might not be able to afford it due to our income bracket etc etc
the other night at dinner I asked my parents if they thought it was an option and my dad just belittled the school and myself and asserted that it would be stupid for me to go to Cornell instead of the University of Maryland because UMD would cost less than $10,000 a year and is right in a central area while Cornell is much more expensive and in “a more rural location, akin to the woods” (replaced his profanities/rudeness).

He actually offended a lot of other places… saying for instance that I should apply to – since I was obviously too stupid to go to UMD.

I’m really bitter and I’m not trying to offend anyone, please don’t get me wrong I think Cornell Engineering is really prestigious, I was just looking for some support/evidence for my case. He’s really controlling so I don’t want to argue but I’d love to present some actual facts and figures to him to show him how wrong he is. Like, % of internships for undergrads or something…

He is such a jerk, I want to repeat. He raves about Cornell and then I basically get in and he berates it. He did have plenty of nice things to say about Berkeley and its location… as I have not been accepted/sent a likely letter. If I did he’d have some obscenities to shout about it too, most likely.

I’m willing to take on loans and stuff. Frankly Ive got more saved than they do in my measly “college fund” which is currently dwindling, but I don’t want to completely break off ties with my dad, at least yet. just feeling glum. no congratulations or anything on the likely…

I don’t know your personal situation, but I tell everyone they need to be firm with their families.

This is a huge part of your life, and YOU are the one who has to live through those years. If you personally feel like Cornell, and NOT UMD is the better choice for you, you need to be firm in your communication of that.

In the end, if your family is in a bad situation financially, you will qualify for financial aid. And if there is still a discrepancy between the costs of the schools, a few thousand dollars in loans are not too much of a pain to pay back in the end.

Your dad is obviously emotional, most likely for many reasons: financial worries, the realization that you are going away to college, the want to keep you nearby, the worries about your future. Reassure him that when it comes to engineering, there is not much better than Cornell. Once you go here, as long as you can stay afloat, every door is opened for you. We have numerous career resources, internship postings, resume workshops, Great faculty who provide amazing recommendations, Knowledgeable peers, challenging and uplifting courses, a commitment to academic excellence, a fun atmosphere, a general sense of camaraderie, a beautiful locale.

Do not fret, and do not feel so stressed about all of this. But it is time for you to step up to the plate, ballast your courage, and tell your dad like it is.

I hope this helps you :)

If you want to show him some stuff on internships/recruiting, here is part of an email I get from engineering career services about WEEKLY resume submission or interview sign up deadlines. Cornell engineers are heavily recruited for internships, co-ops and full time jobs. While not all these jobs are specifically for ChemEs, you get the idea of the caliber of company that recruits at Cornell.

And the email continues…

And that’s now, when job prospects have been dwindling, and spring recruiting is slowing down. Imagine those e-mails during the heyday of fall semester.

Prospects are pretty good at Cornell if you do well. I am a Cornell Engineer (CS/OR Double major) and I just landed myself a summer job at a big bank. All the big companies come to recruit here… If you get good grades and take advantage of the ample opportunities present here, you will have good employment prospects.

If you want some data/stats on employment, check out the Engineering Website:

[Cornell Engineering : Post Graduate Reports](http://www.engineering.cornell.edu/student-services/engineering-coop-career-services/statistics/Post-Graduate-Reports.cfm)

In all honesty, don’t sweat it. I’ve enjoyed my time here at Cornell but what I got from going here is nothing that I couldn’t have gotten from an honors program at a good state school. If you get financial aid or can afford Cornell comfortably, by all means come to Cornell, but it is sincerely not worth going into $200,000 worth of debt to come here. Just make the best of what you have wherever you go and you will be fine.
