Engineering Major(s): MSE vs ME mostly

Question is just for knowledge to pass onto a friend. I am not 100% sure about the engineering major I should tell him to apply into.

He is interested in the following:

-Tissue engineering. Working on engineering tissues such as organs, stem cell research, heart valves, etc. (I think BioE or even MSE?)

-Automotive, working on engines, safety tests, how to make the car more efficient.(ME all the way I told him)

-Petroleum industry(working to understand how to make a more efficient process for hydrofracking, all that good stuff for oil extraction mostly.(PetroE and ME I think?)

Anyway, he is also wondering about job prospects in them. I don’t know about MSE or BioE. Would MSE be able to land jobs like tissue engineers or working in the auto industry or even petro?

Or would ME be the way?

I’m a MSE PhD and have been dealing with some of the world’s largest oil & automotive companies in the last few weeks (we’re trying to get projects funded by them), so, yes, you can do work with them as a materials engineer. The types of projects may be a little different than what a MechE would do (for example, making new types of materials to use in cars versus tweaking an engine or door hinge’s design), but those really large companies have a use for just about every kind of engineer.
