First question: What does the UM Engineering focus on? For example, in the south, it’s usually petrochemical engineering. What about UM?
Second question: Will the Engineering department award scholarships even if you didn’t apply for them? kind of like how you don’t have to apply for President’s as along as you have fafsa.

I’m not 100% sure (pretty sure, though), but I don’t think you need to file FAFSA to get merit scholarships like President’s.

I’m not very familiar with the overall Engineering program, but I do know that several of D’s friends are specialized in the kind of engineering they study…computer engineering, etc. etc. There’s no across the board “focus”. If you spend some time on UMD’s website, I’m sure you can find all kinds of details about the Clark School of Engineering. For your 2nd question, when the Engineering dept offers scholarships to incoming freshmen, they did not have to apply for them. I did see on one of these threads that someone “heard” they were not awarding as many scholarships to incoming students as they have in the past.
