Engineering or business for entrepreneurship

I love business but I’m not really sure what they can teach me in a classroom that I can’t learn from books/actual experience. This is why I am trying to pursue engineering (so I can have a skill coming out of school rather than being a business admin).

The ultimate goal is to become an entrepreneur.

Will engineering take up so much of my time that I won’t have time to make contacts, socialize, work on side projects, etc. or will I have time to do these things? I have many friends in engineering majors that say they are doing all they can to keep their head above water and don’t have much time for anything else.

I’m a self taught programmer and love to program, which is why I’m considering Computer Engineering or Computer Science for a major.

I’ve been accepted to many places, including UIUC. If I do engineering, should I take an easier school, or should I go for it at UIUC?

Thank you.

Well, if you want to become an entrepreneur of an engineering company, it helps to have some background in the type of engineering the company will do. You are correct to be concerned about the need to balance between the engineering side and the business side (making contacts, lining up investors, etc.). Some entrepreneurs who want to focus more on the engineering side handle this by partnering with someone who has more of a business focus. It can take time to find a partner, however.
