Engineering Projects?

Does participating in engineering projects give one an edge in graduate applications? Well I’m thinking of doing Steel bridge (for an asce competition) but I’m not sure if it’s worthwhile. Well I really wanted to do another project but it isn’t offered this year so I’m considering steel bridge but it’s going to be a lot of work. Well being captain is one thing but how about a regular participant?

I don’t know if it’ll help for grad schools, but I put that in for my apps, and it certainly didn’t hurt.

Even if it doesn’t help, definitely take part in the steel bridge competition. I’ve been part of it for the past two years, and a co-captain last year. It’s a great experience and a lot of fun. When else are you going to get to actually build something you design in civil engineering?

It definitely is a lot of work… I spent my entire spring break last year working on it, but it’s still worthwhile. Recruit some of your classmates to help out, and also try to get some freshmen or sophomores to join as well. They can still contribute. The only requirement is that they be a member of ASCE.

Good luck!
