I have seen a couple of people receive Clark engineering scholarships. I am curious what GPA and SAT scores are necessary to be competitive to receive a departmental scholarship. Also does anyone know if a person has to stay in the engineering department to continue receiving the scholarship? Thanks

I don’t know about the typical stats but you have to be enrolled in the School of Engineering to keep the scholarship.

With the high #'s needed overall to get into Clark, I think you’re talking numbers just under Banneker/Key stats for these.

From what I have seen it appears over 1500 on SAT and over 4.0 GPA and then a lot of kids who fit those stats didn’t receive them. They also gave some scholarships it appears to students with lower stats if they had financial need.

@dave, astrophsicsmom makes a good point. Forget any particular scholarship and aim for the top. Since you are considered for almost all merit aid at UMd along with your general app, just get the best grades and scores you can and see what happens … now I’m off to take three more finals …

I read somewhere that the Clark departmental scholarships do take into account need.

Kendall, that may be the case for some/all of those scholarships, but it still doesn’t change the GPA/SAT #'s they also require. It just lowers the pool of available recipients to those crazy smart with no $$.

I had called engineering department about these scholarships and was told that you had to have a minimum 1500 math and cr. If you had high scores that fell slightly below this, they also considered need. Unfortunately for my son, he had a 770math and 720 CR. He did not get a Banneker invite nor a departmental scholarship:( Regardless of our disappointment, he loves Maryland and is going and I still think it was a good choice for him.

If it is the same as it was a few years ago, then you need to apply separately for the engineering scholarships. You do need to stay in the engineering school for all 4 years to keep it. It will say this when you receive the scholarship acceptance letter. As a Clark School Ambassador, I’ve been told to say that there are very few scholarships available for incoming freshman. There are a lot more available once you prove that you are doing well in the school. Those you can apply for every year. I assume that since there are very few people who get the scholarship, like previously mentioned, people’s stats must be just under what is usual for B/K.
