When S went to engineering open house he was told a lot of freshmen accepted engineers get merit and need based scholarships in April. Does anyone know the criteria for awarding these? We’re OOS and have a big gap between COA and EFC, Maryland gave S zero in grants.

One thing you can do is apply for scholarships from the engineering school after your first year. You put in a little application in april (they will email the school about it). Sometimes the school gives you money, sometimes they don’t. If your GPA and application is good, they will try and hook you up with money from their corporate sponsors. I recommend you fill out this application after your first year, I got a nice but this way and I am definitely not the “model student” type.
