i think that 1400 score is combined for instate and oos, but instaters tend to take ACT more often.

the 3 schools are similar for traditional engineering disciplines. only caveat is that CS is more prestigious at CMU. of course cornell has the bragging right of being the best ivy engineering school.

Yeah, I think 1400 will be pretty close to the OOS SAT because most in Michigan will only take the ACT. Those in Michigan that take the SAT are likely aiming for OOS schools as well, and are probably are of as high calibre. Say maybe something like 1430 or 1440?

In Engineering circles, all three are equally respected. Overall, Cornell and Michigan are slightly more recognized than CMU, but all three have excellent reputations overall. In terms of overall experience, Michigan and Cornell are more well rounded than CMU.

If you get into all three schools, I would recommend Cornell or Michign over CMU, but you really should visit all three schools before deciding.
