Would the engineers that develop cameras at companies like these be considered computer engineers? I mean, a digital camera is essentially a computer with a lens, but I just want to make sure. Also, I know that a lot of you on here are comp eng/EE majors, do you know anyone that has worked or does work for a company designing DSLRs?

if you’re like tom scholz you can go to MIT, get a EE, then work for polaroid as a senior design engineer, create new electric and acoustic guitar harmonies, and then found a band (boston) who sold over 30 million albums. but if you arent a musical genius like him, anything with circuitry (EE or CE) is good. but i do not know anyone who works for the type of companies you are asking for.

I just took a look at the Canon and Nikon sites and the only engineering job I saw there was for a software engineer. Have a look at their sites for employment opportunities in the US, if that’s where you want to work. I’d think EE/Computer Engineer/Software engineer would be best.

I always thought designing lenses would be the perfect job…

optical engineering

Canon and Nikon not only make copiers and cameras but also microlithography equipment. They have a need for all types of engineers - electrical, mechanical, optical, systems etc.
