Engineers, help me with my schedule!

I am overwhelmed by all the different pre-req’s for different universities. Can somebody recommend me a schedule for Electrical Engineering?

Fall 2011:
-Calculus 1
-Intro to Java 1
-English 1

I am so lost as to what to take… I looked on Assist and could not figure out a schedule that will allow me to transfer as soon as possible.

Thanks

Are you a freshman? Any APs? Which UCs are you interested in or do you not have any idea at this point?

No, I’ve been attending a CC for 2 years now, taking only general classes. I’ve only decided to pursue engineering recently. I dont care for what UC I go into, but I want to transfer out as soon as possible.

If you’ve never taken a class related to Engineering (or even Calc), how do you know your want to major in EE?

If you are willing to stay at your CC for two more years, you shouldn’t have a problem transferring.

My dad is an electrical engineer. I’ve been a geek all my life and love technology. I thought I wanted to go accounting, but I guess engineering is the way to go.

Bump… I was wondering if i should also complete the IGETC along with sticking in some pre-reqs?

Will I be considered for admission if I complete the IGETC, and about half of the pre-reqs done? It would take me forever to complete the pre-reqs. I don’t want to stay at the CC any longer, lol.

Considered: Yes. Admitted: No way in hell!
If you want to go to a UC, you gotta complete most, or all of the pre-reqs.

It’s nearly impossible… sorry dude

Generally, it’s highly discouraged for engineering students to complete the IGETC. However, if you want to apply to UCSD, do this.

Add General Chem 1 and another GE class if possible. That’s your best bet, since you haven’t got Calc 1 done it means you cannot clear pre-reqs for Calc2, Mechanics, Discrete Math and Linear Algebra yet.

Snipe, thanks. I feel a little bit better. I knew Chem belonged in there somewhere.

Ooops, Gen Chem is only for UCLA I guess >.< Which specific UC(s) you want to transfer to so I can help you set up a more accurate schedule? :D

Well, all the UC’s require chem, and my CC’s Chem 1A will satisfy the Chem requirement. I’m not too sure which UC I want to transfer to, though…

Thanks :D

Really? I thought only LA required Chem. But yeah, that’s the main idea of what you should take next sem. If you want, you can always add an introduction to engineering class (to give you an idea of what EE is about). It’s fun, not very time-consuming and requires no pre-reg, I believe.

All engineering majors need at least calc 2 to be completed. It’s best if you have all. If you have your GE done, no biggie. UC’s like that you have the IGETC completed. If you are IGETC qualified (meaning you have all the pre-reqs done) then you are golden.

BUT you have to get the major stuff outa the way. And that depends on which school you go to. My advice- take at least 5 classes, and don’t work. It will be a pain, but you can get a lot accomplished in a year. For EE, skip Java. You dont need it for transfer and can always learn that later. Thats a good class to take over the summer. (Or learn it on your own, its not hard. I took my first programming class online, and we just followed the book).

Follow a freshman schedule: Calc 1, Physics w/ lab 1, Chem 1 w/ lab at a minimum. Find a semester school that has physics. Taking the quarters suck, separate classes for the mechanical, electro-mag, optical or whatever.

If you didn’t know, go to [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) to find out what UC’s require what to transfer. A lot easier than talking to counselors at school, and they are just going to pull up that web site for reference anyway. Play your cards right and pick the right classes, you should be able to apply for Fall 2012.

good luck.

I am transferring to UCSD electrical engineering major this fall.
Since you said you have taken GE classes for 2 years, I assume you are pretty much done with the IGETC? If you can achieve a 3.5 GPA by the end of fall 2011, sign up for the TAG in September and apply to UCSD this November. They will accept you even if you do not have any of your prereq done.

Yeah, what dominicfhk said. UCSD’s EE program is not impacted, so try to complete as many pre-reqs as you can while maintaining a GPA over 3.5 and completing IGETC, and you will be admitted to the program. I’d say have at least Calc I and Calc II done. For EE, I’d go with C/C++ in lieu of Java. You have to have both of their English/Critical Thinking courses done by the end of Fall 2011, though. See if you can take English/Critical Thinking concurrently, or else you won’t be able to fulfill the TAG agreement. I’d say Calc I, programming, and both English classes for the fall. Focus on getting those two English courses done, because they’re absolutely required.

Alright guys, thanks a lot. I’ve been reading a lot about TAG + UCSD and it sounds good. I’ll squeeze the two english courses in there and see if I can qualify for TAG.

:D

Urgent question!!

Since I need an english/critical thinking course, does Phil 10 qualify?

There seems to be two sets of critical thinking courses in IGETC, which are:

-1B - Critical Thinking - English Composition (Contains Engl 5A: Critcal thinking in writing and writing)

-8A - Critical Thinking (Also contains Engl 5A, Phil 10…)

I think only category 1B applies… since Crit Thinking is the second English composition course.
Btw, what school do you go too? I can search their IGETC form and have an exact answer for you if you like…

I go to Laney College.

Thanks!! :D

Ok, so basically from what I see here: <a href=“Redirect Notice”>Redirect Notice; , only ENGL 5 satisfies the Crit Thinking requirement. I think it’s much easier than PHIL 10 even if PHIL 10 satisfies this requirement, since a general english course has broader topics to write about. Good luck man!

I just transferred to UCD for civil engineering. I did not have all of my prereqs done, but I did complete IGETC and most engineering prereqs. Math and physics prereqs are very, very important for any engineering transfer; for EE, Circuits is probably the next most important course to complete. Chemistry is good to have, but if you have to choose between chem and physics, go with physics. If you ever have a choice between an IGETC course and an engineering prereq course, go with the engineering prereq. Good luck.
