Engineers working for Railways/Railroads....

Can anyone shed a little light on engineers in this particular sector? Maybe some of you have or know somone that has experience or have experienced jobs in this arena. I was wondering what the day-to-day consists of. I heard it’s quite lucrative with excellent benefits as well. Thanks in advance

I have done some design work for a couple of engineers - electrical engineers, not the train driver. They work with the electrical signals that are running through the rails and sensors/data collection on the trains. It seems like a neat job. It has been a few years as both were in their 60s 15 years ago.

What area of engineering are you interested in. I interned with one of the top 4 class 1 RR’s this past spring and I really enjoyed it. The pay isn’t going to be the top monthly but in the end with the benefits (pension & RR retirement) you come out sitting pretty nice. I did IE work for them, so we did a lot of business process stuff, capacity planning/improvement, simulation, stuff like that.

I’m interested in the electrical side of things. Sorry about not stating that earlier. A friend told me that when he retires he will get 5K a month and they will also pay his wife 2.5K a month.

Yeah, that would be about average. The RR I worked with had a ranking structure similar to the military. Once you made it to a certain pay-grade you also started to get stock options. Also everyone gets a pretty good bonus at the end of the year, starting at ~5K. You can do signals for EE or they will hire people with engineering degrees for any other job out there too because the RR loves people with engineering degrees.
