English and Fine Arts colleges [US citizen outside the US, IB 36/42, 1470 SAT]

Hello,
My daughter wishes to apply to a college with a good program in English as well as something in Art/design (perhaps a minor), in the U.S. Would appreciate any suggestions.

stats + budget?

What is your state of residency? I ask because in-state vs. OOS tuition costs could be a factor, depending on your budget for college.

My daughter is a US citizen. We currently reside in India. My family lives in California, but we are not bound by that in terms of location. She is currently studying IB and is in grade 11. Her HL subjects are English, Economics and Visual Arts and her SL subjects are Math, Spanish and Biology.

The University of Iowa immediately comes to mind: UofI offers majors in both English, and English and Creative Writing, and hosts the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and International Writing Program. UofI also offers art as a major and minor.

The most important information to provide is your annual budget. Private colleges and universities (using USC as an example) can cost over $95,000 a year. A public state university can be much less expensive, with a wide range in total cost of attendance. Binghamton University will cost $50,000, U Michigan will cost $72,000.

We need to know about her grades. What does she do outside of school? Many colleges will offer excellent English programs and art minors. We need a lot more information about the environment she might want to be in. Is she a sporty person, creative, interested in community service? There are hundreds of colleges that offer what your daughter is looking for. Narrowing it down by telling us more is going to make your task easier.

She is a creative person. She loves art, drama, singing, dancing. She also plays the guitar. She’s a black belt in taekwondo. She’s been doing yoga for over 7 years now. She conducts art workshops to raise funds for the underprivileged since 9th grade. She scored a 98.8% in her 10th grade board exam, standing 3 rd in her school and 6th in the nation. Her first term IB score dipped a little due to change of board, she got a 36/42, but the second term prospects look better. She scored a 1470 on her SAT (750 in english and 720 in math). She will appear once again in august.

We are in India right now. She is a US citizen though. Right now we are not looking at a budget, we first want to identify our options irrespective of budget and narrow it down then.

There are over 3,000 universities in the US so the 1st thing to do is restrict by cost after running NPCs.
You can pick one state flagship, 1 NESCAC, any university listed on this thread and run the NPC on each. You’ll likely get quite different results: some factor equity some don’t, some look at all investments or properties, etc. And some don’t but don’t meet need (ie., if you can afford 12k and they cost 28k, they dont care if you don’t have the money.) Thr best financial aid comes from the universities themselves- Some universities offer merit aid (for high test scores, rigor&GPA) and some “meet need” (ie., depending on whether your family makes 75k or less, 125k or less, 200k or less… the student gets financial aid to cover what parents can’t afford to pay.)
Whether you need financial aid, merit aid, or a mix of both will direct your search.

Unless you can afford USD$95,000 per year for four years, budget needs to be one of the initial screens for the college list.

Yes, and I know it can sometimes seem to some people like it would easier to do it at a later stage, but it really is not–you can waste a lot of time investigating colleges that end up impractical, while overlooking colleges that could be excellent practical options once you take a closer look.

That said, of course if you know your budget would comfortably cover something like $400K over four years (and this is not sarcasm, it is true for some families), that is a simple answer–you can look anywhere. But short of that, it will make the investigatory process work much more efficiently to know your limit up front.
