English/French major: Where should I go from here?

Hi everyone,

First, I apologize for knowing almost nothing about the application process to medical schools. I’m working on it! I’m an English and French major concentrating in poetry at a top-ranked liberal arts college, but to make a long story short, after some study abroad experiences in the past year, I think I want to try being serious about medicine.

I self-studied for the MCAT and came away with a 38T, and my current GPA is about a 3.8–but I’ve taken no sciences (with the exception of computer science) or math, and I’ll be a senior in the fall, so it seems unlikely that I can fit in the required pre-med courses.

Any advice on what I should do? I have no medicine-related EC’s, either, and I’m not sure how to go about getting experience.

Thanks for any thoughts!

The first thing you should do is visit the health professions advisor at your college. The advisor will help you evaluate your best course of action.

There are also specialized programs for college grads who are interested in med school but lack the necessary science & math coursework called post-bacc programs.

AMCAS has a helpful search engine here:

[Postbaccalaureate Premedical Programs - Search](http://services.aamc.org/postbac/)

Be sure to select “career changer” as the type.

In the meantime, start by getting involved in community service projects and volunteering at a local medical facility.
