I am a high school senior and am going to be majoring in English with a focus in secondary education and am wondering whether a minor in psychology would be a good addition to my education. I have always been interested in philosophy and know that it can help with writing and critical thinking. It also is prevalent in literature so I think that it could be very beneficial. But, would it be a better idea to look more into psychology or creative writing?
Either one works for all of the reasons you noted! There is a lot of philosophy in English literature, and you could bring that to bear for your students. But there’s also a lot of psychology - both in the literature itself and in classroom management and education in general - and that could be helpful. (You have to take some of those courses anyway, though.) Creative writing is good for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that you could potentially teach a high school course on it as an elective.
I think you should minor in whatever interests you more and feels right to you. There’s also the possibility of not minoring in anything and just taking classes in those areas that interest you.
