Hi, I’m reviewing a Sylvan practice SAT, and I don’t understand why the word “ensured” is the incorrect part of the sentence…

After providing extra tutoring, the teacher ensured the student that she would see some improvement on her next essay.

I don’t get it… Help?

To ensure that something happens is to make sure it does happen.
To assure someone of something is to make him or her sure or confident of it.

These are called diction errors, and they are rarely on the SAT. There are usually 0 of these on any given SAT; 1 on some. Diction errors are errors in meaning (confusing one word for another word).

“The company’s precautions ensured the safety of its workers.”
“I assure you that we are safe.”

thanks…i guess it’s not a big deal to miss this one then…

:)
