entertainment jobs?

i’m not so sure what i’d do there, but i’ve always wanted to work at a big company with room for advancement, and tv stations keep popping in my head. i’ve heard that many big agents start out at the mail room and that position actually gives a lot of room for advancement. i’m not sure i want to be an agent. maybe someone who puts the story together, or writes the shows. i’m thinking of moving to LA or NY after college and try my luck there, at the tv stations, probably starting out as an assistant or something. i like my current job at the library, but every time i go there, and i see the people who’ve been there, at the same job for the past 10-15 years, i just know i don’t want to be like that. they look pretty happy, and some do like their jobs, but i’d get bored working there for so long at the same position. any comments and suggestions on my plans?

do you have any experience? what are you doing now that relates to what you want to do in the industry? it’s cutthroat, so you need to be building your experience now AND be working on your networking

oh no, i have no experience, to be honest. i was a marketing intern a while back, but i’ve just been working at the library and dealing with school. well, i applied to a local non-fiction production company for an internship. if i get the position, i’ll try to stay for a year if i can.

i say some book store: not only do you get to read new books/magazines in your shift, but a lot of interesting people go there (especially college kids)

try Barnes and noble

haha, i’ve applied there twice already. that’s not exactly the kind of job i was looking for either.

^ why not?

My teacher’s son worked for Fox all throughout college. He started off with a base position, and with time, became an unpaid intern. Then when he left college they offered him a job. He has done numerous things, and loved it: newscaster, director, editor…

That’s all I know, and the time when he began to be paid may have been earlier than after college, I can’t remember.

He still works for Fox.

If you want anything in writing I’d suggest you take some creative writing or fine arts classes/courses. You can’t just slip into a scripting position. You need contacts and to have been writing for some time.

come on embroglio… how many of us can get positions in Fox?

EVERYONE!!!

Haha I have no idea how he got it. He just went and asked…

I mean why not?

His parents aren’t famous, they aren’t rich.
He went to UTexas, so it isn’t like he was some student at some amazing school for communications.

I suppose the point of my story was to ask around and see what you can get.

:D

that’s amazing. i don’t even know where to start asking. i suppose i’ll try my school counselor.
