ER Docs Talk About Life in the ER

Interesting. And worth reading for those considering entering medicine. While this article is about ER docs, much of what is there could be applied to many other fields of medicine.

It’s not all glamour, and glory.

Super interesting- thanks for sharing. My D is going into medicine and I shared it with her.

I also found this very interesting.

This reminded me of something that I learned many years ago. I found out the difference between dating an engineer or mathematician (which was me), versus dating a doctor or a nurse (I was the date). When you date an engineer, occasionally they may need to have short work-related conversations and you have no idea what they are saying. If you are dating a doctor or a nurse, occasionally they will have short work-related conversations and you will wish that you had no idea what they were saying.

I thought I saw some overlap between being an ER doctor and being a DVM. In both cases you see emergency cases, including lots of routine ones and a few pretty bad ones. Death occasionally occurs in either.

It is definitely not all glamour and glory.

This so true! Both my daughters say they’ve sort lost any sense of propriety and occasionally end up really grossing people out over dinner with vividly detailed medical conversations.

DVM can be extremely difficult emotionally, because so many people do not take proper care of their pets, bring them in only when they are too far gone to treat, drop off pets without the intention to pick them up, and/or are unwilling or unable to pay for treatment. It can sometimes feel like treating abused kids, while trying to convince the abuser that the kid is worth spending money to treat. (Source: My vet friends)
