“Golf and basketball standout Eric Salazar has packed a lot into the past 12 months.

The Del Campo High School senior:

• Overcame two major lung surgeries.
• His bronze-medal effort helped Del Campo to second place in an Academic Decathlon, the team’s best performance in 20 years.
• Was the Capital Athletic League’s second-leading scorer in basketball (18.3 points a game), was all-CAL a third consecutive season and helped lead his team to the playoffs.
• Worked with disadvantaged families in Mexico during spring vacation, forgoing the chance to play in an all-star basketball game.
• Accepted to Princeton University, where he will play golf in the fall. He might try to earn a roster spot on the basketball team as a walk-on.

And he isn’t finished.

He is playing his most consistent golf while excelling academically, maintaining a 4.2 weighted grade-point average.

“I think this past year I’ve managed my time better than in years past,” Salazar said. “There has been little time to slow down, but it’s a lot of fun.”

But pain preceded the fun…

This is a great story about a determined and talented member of the Class of ’11 and a community that has plenty of reasons to be proud of him.

I’m impressed by his story but I have to say, I’m familiar with that high school and a 4.2 weighted is not very high. Just goes to show that GPA isn’t everything.

GPA isn’t always everything. was that not obvious from before???

gosh, some of you applicants are so…ughh…

no offense.

I agree with yourdirtysockz. High school GPA = completely unimpressive and pointless the second you get into college, and even before then not that great. Newsflash: no one cares.

It’s funny, the same thing happens when you leave undergrad for graduate school or your first job.

This whole ‘weighted’ GPA thing kills me. We only just started doing in when I graduated from high school, and they had a 12 point system which was much easier to think about.

I was referring to the caliber of his workload. I am very familiar with the high school and doubt he is academically ready for Princeton. The post made it seem like maintaining a 4.2 while playing golf, etc. was an achievement. It would be at many other high schools, but not this one. I’m not saying he didn’t deserve acceptance, just that his grades aren’t up to par which could be explained by his health problems, sports commitments etc.

So my point in my first post was, that you can get into Princeton with a below average workload and average grades (compared to other Princeton students). I shouldn’t have used the word GPA I guess.
