Erich Segal, 72, RIP

“What can you say about a twenty-five year old girl who died?” Love Story.

I missed my chance at celluloid fame when I did not take up the call that went to Boston-area college students to go to Fenway Park and play an extra.

Besides writing Love Story and its sequel, Oliver’s Story, Erich Segal taught Classics at Harvard, Yale and Princeton.

I’ve heard he died in England of heartache. Is he teaching in England?

He had advanced Parkinson’s Disease, and died of a heart attack. He was an honorary fellow of a college at Oxford, but apparently had been substantially non compos mentis for quite awhile.

I loved Love Story.

I lived for a year in what had been the office in his old apartment. I was told that was where he wrote that book. I never felt any vibrations and was never sorry that I didn’t.

Lergnom,
Love Means Never Having to Say You’re Sorry for not writing another book like his…

'Bull**** Preppie!"

H and I saw the movie in Boston while in college (we got the last two seats at a sold out performance and considered ourselves terribly lucky), and I remember weeping all the way back to the dorm. Now whenever I catch a glimpse of the movie it seems incredibly cheesy—as I’m sure today’s weeping girls will find the Twilight movies when they reach their fifties!

My brother took a class from him at Yale. So sorry to hear of his passing, but love that someone said he died of “heartache”. That would have been sadly appropriate.

It was filmed during my freshman year at Harvard, and some of my friends were extras. A couple of years later, I got to meet Erich as a result of my then boyfriend’s taking a class from him at Harvard, where Erich was a visiting prof. Erich invited us and other students to a party at his place, and also gave me an autographed copy of Strunk and White’s “Elements of Style.”

I loved that movie. I thought it was sooooo romantic, and I thought it was so darned cool that it centered around my world. Now it just seems so long ago and cheesy and that makes me feel so o…

An autographed copy of Elements of Style; wonder what that will be worth  Too bad the 3 copies we have here at home aren’t worth anything, although they are well worn.

My daughter has never seen the movie or read the book so I had her add it to her Netflix; we will watch together. I am sure there is a copy of the book somewhere at my mother’s house; I will have to go look this weekend.
