People have asked how the squirrel was not noticed when the woman boarded the plane. My theory is the squirrel might have been hidden in the bag, the woman was holding it in her lap, and the flight attendant asked the woman to place it in the overhead bin. The woman might have explained that there was a live animal… and the squirrel was outed. Or she took it out of the bag and a flight attendant noticed it then.

I often get upgraded to the front of the plane on Alaska, so I get to board in the first wave and then sit there watching others board. People haul so much crap on board of all shapes and sizes that it is impossible to notice if one of these bags is a animal carrier or what. The crew might not have been even aware that someone was bringing an ESA.
@Massmomm or we can go back to the good ole days and and only SERVICE ANIMALS are allowed on the plane. I say this as a loving dog owner.
I’m tired of the entitlement. When I travel my dog stays with a nice pet sitter or if I’m driving to my moms or grandmas I take him with me. He doesn’t get to fly under the pretense that I can’t function without him.
These people are really making hard for citizens with legitimate service animals.
The psychologists in my state have been taking this issue quite seriously. I have no hesitation to say I need to see you for a year, and get to know your dog.
I’m so allergic, I tell flight attendants to move me from my aisle seat to wherever. I’m not allergic to all dogs, but put an unwashed one near me and I’m Sick.
This was Frontier. NO room under the seats, overhead is for paid carry-on only. Seats do not recline.

The actual amount depends on the state law. But the amount is not the point, which is to send a message to these selfish folks that this crap ain’t acceptable and won’t be enabled anymore. (Think of all the free press that they would get for filing a claim.)
Small claims courts usually do not allow corporations as a party, and most do not allow attorneys to represent a party.
Of course the amounts are set by the states. But those are typical top amounts allowed for claims by corporations… an airline would lose significantly more on legal fees. A court should not be used solely “to send a message.” It should be used primarily to make the plaintiff whole.
Airlines should continue booting pet smugglers and demand seeing actual ESAs before boarding. Glad this squirrel story is making the news. Maybe it will keep another pet owner from trying to pull the same crap.
Frontier will allow only cats or dogs on leash or carrier starting Nov.1.

This after Frontier refunded her money and gave her a ticket voucher.
If she wants to own Frontier Airlines, she’s got bigger issues than a support squirrel can address.

Would a jury of her peers include a miniature horse, a peacock, a few rats, snake and maybe a goat?
I don’t know any airline that will take rodents for all sorts of good reasons.
While TSA might have just “done their job” it seems like someone might have pointed out to the lady that her squirrel just “wasn’t going to fly”.
After front desk, TSA, the personnel doing the boarding has tacitly approved the squirrels presence by not saying anything I can see where she’d be upset (whether right or wrong).
I’d like to know what she put on the ESA form…rules clearly state no rodents. However it mentions sugar gliders (a type of squirrel) separately which might be a bit confusing.
And then everyone had to deboard to get her off the plane. Don’t even look at me…
No wonder it’s now cats and dogs only.
One would think that at this point people would realize it ain’t gonna happen. Are they living under a rock? Or just monumentally self-absorbed?

Delta bans kittens and puppies as ESA animals on long flights
I think people who use the “therapy animal” without their dog being a true therapy dog should be prosecuted by the law. They are liars. My son got bitten by a fake one at a college visit this past fall. He was standing with our dog and the so-called therapy dog came up behind him, lunged at my dog who was just sitting there and bit my son through his pants, ripping them, and causing puncture wounds, a black and blue bruise and bleeding. Luckily for us at least the dogs “liar” owners had the dog up on its shots. However we still had to bring my son to the doctor and have him get a shot, a new pair of pants and he had to deal with the pain for a while.
