Esperanto

You know what would be awesome to add to Cornell’s already unique list of majors and departments?
The Esperanto language! It was invented 100 years ago by Dr. L.L. Zamenhof, a Polish Oculist. His goal was to create a language with none of the nationalistic baggage of English, French, German or other natural languages. It is a simple language to learn, and rather fun, once you find people to speak it with.

The problem with Esperanto is that it’s invented, and unlikely to gain legitimate consideration by most people. Also at issue is the fact that there aren’t actually that many speakers, and it’s rather limited in its reach.

Cornell’s been cutting down on some programs, including Greek! The professor offered to teach it without pay, but due to University policies, she can’t teach a class with no pay. Right now it’s more kind of a weekly meeting.

Dutch is being taught next semester though!
