ESPN reporter suspended after getting caught on video berating a towing company employee

Not AT ALL to excuse her horrible behavior–but I found this tidbit about the towing company interesting. It appears to be a nasty piece of work as well:

"A quick glance at Advanced Towing Arlington’s Yelp page reveals a bit of a trend: apparently they lurk around area parking lots, waiting for the owners to leave, then swoop in to tow cars that are “illegally” parked for various reasons.

That’s sort of what happened to McHenry, who according to various reports had her car towed from the parking lot of a Chinese restaurant. The tow truck company claims she left her car there for two hours after the place closed, making it illegally parked.

“They towed my car one minute after Golds Gym closed,” one person wrote on Yelp in March.

There are a bunch of posts about people parking in store parking lots, only to return minutes later to find their cars gone.

There’s even a story about the time a woman’s car was towed with her dog in it.

The word “predatory” is used over and over again to describe the company. And of the 89 reviews on Yelp, 80 of them are 1 star. Not saying a tow truck company is going to be anyone’s favorite, but 80 of 89?"

Just to put Yelp reviews in perspective: Who the heck is going to give a positive review on Yelp to a company who towed their car away?

I hate those predatory towing companies, however, the poor woman just works there. She didnt have to attack her.

Somewhere out there, there’s a college who is hoping no one will go to the trouble to look up from where she graduated. She obviously missed the classes on maintaining a public image when you’re in the media field.

Isn’t that what towing companies are supposed to do? Tow cars that are illegally parked?

Oh, good God… I looked it up - she’s from Medill at Northwestern. How embarrassing for them.

Ok, we are missing what may have triggered her response. Did they rob her, damage her car, made a bait and switch? I think it is completely unfair to criticize her response without knowing the full story. Sounds like a predatory towing company and they are further harassing her by publishing an edited portion of her interaction.

Sorry, there’s no excuse to berate the woman personally, no matter what the towing company did to her. Absolutely none - she’s a spoiled brat. I’m not saying she has no right to be extremely angry if they are indeed some predatory company - but scream and yell about the company, not the personal characteristics of the woman working there.

In all the times I’ve gotten really, really mad at a company (Comcast is high on my list right now), it has just NEVER occurred to me to berate an employee in the manner she did.

This is just awful. I don’t believe her apology is sincere…it looks like a carefully worded statement crafted by someone in HR for ESPN . It takes a mean person to say such hateful things , especially to a person’s face.

And the cashier did not order the tow. Why take it out on her? Yell at the tow truck driver.

Again, since the towing company did not show the first part of their interaction, I can only suspect that they may be hiding something. Without that evidence, I am withholding my judgement on her behavior. We shouldn’t jump to conclusions without all of the facts.I know, this looks bad, but the video is currently one sided.

The post about the reviews on the company is on target. Apparently the company has what are called “spotters”, which I assume are commissioned people who hang out looking for revenue opportunities. They’re also accused of using “decoys”, which I assume are other cars parked in the area from which they’re going to tow.

Plus, we aren’t able to see the woman’s face who is on the other side of the counter, and we may not have the entire exchange that occurred. Certainly the part that was shown wasn’t her finest hour, but there may be more to this than just what’s on the video. You’d think that the news would report what she had to pay to retrieve the car, but apparently that doesn’t help the story they want to tell.

I have a suspicion that the towing company will ultimately regret allowing this tape to become public. If you’ve got a good racket going, you don’t want to spoil it by getting into the public eye. My guess is that this tape was released by some lower down employee or family member without the owner’s approval.

Agree. This is getting a lot of local news coverage - calling attention to this towing company’s predatory practices. Loads of complaints. They have released a stmt that they accept her apology and did not want her to be suspended from work. Clearly Advance Towing wants this scrutiny to go away.

^^^What difference does it make if it’s a crappy towing company? If they unfairly towed her car, then she could have said so. If they overcharged her, she could have said so. If they damaged her car, she could have said so. She could have dealt with the specifics of whatever she thought was unfair, but instead, she chose to hurl personal insults at an employee.

So, if I think Verizon overcharged me, do I call the 800 number and tell whomever answers the phone that they are a total loser for working there? Do I point out how superior I am because I have a better job and life? I think not.

These sorts of vulgar insults, calling the clerk “baby girl,” etc…snarky little personal arrows and digs seems to be something that some 20 somethings engage in…she probably thought that she was quite witty.

She has an undergrad degree from Stetson, located in Florida…never heard of it before today.

The Stetson Hatters!!!

Why are some posters trying to switch the blame to the towing company?

Yes we know those towing companies are scumbags, but what does that have to do with her insulting the cashier there? There is no need to see the rest of the tape because the cashier tells her she is being taped, and that was very nice of her. She is a classic, tv , “pretty” type who is used to everyone bowing down to her. It was a typical mean girl tantrum. The “I am better than you” makes me sick. She is probably mean to cleaning people at hotels, cab drivers, etc.

In all honesty, who would give a good review to the company that towed their car ? It’s not exactly a business that makes people happy. I don’t care what happened before or that was edited out. Her remarks were unacceptable , cruel and hateful. You can’t dial that back after the words are out there. She should be forced to work in that " trailer " and see how it feels to be verbally abused, although I doubt she would be disrespected in the same manner that she showed to the woman on the receiving end of her tongue lashing.

“…snatching cars away that were inadvertently left in a posted parking lot for moments.”

What? How do you inadvertently leave your car somewhere ?
