For several of my college applications, I plan on writing a 500 word essay that uses a quote from an obscure book that I have read as a starting point. How do other writers typically write such an essay, and what are ways to make my essay stand out when compared to other essays about similar topics? (Also, what should I be communicating while writing this essay?)

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

If you use it as a starting point, I’d recommend putting it in italics right above your first paragraph. Then just jump into your essay.

You should avoid making it an analysis of the book itself. How did the book affect you and your “life philosophy?” I wouldn’t worry about making the link to the quote painfully obvious. Write an anecdote that demonstrates that quote’s relevance to your life, and the connections will emerge organically.
