Would affirmative action make a bad college app essay topic? I suppose I would really need to know what I’m talking about… Good sources, anyone?
At the least, if I speak for it, they wouldn’t be offended or anything, right?

Why didn’t I write my essays earlier? sigh

dont write about affirmative action unless it relates to you, no wait scratch that, just dont write about it at all

I had a small paragraph about affirmative action in my essay, but it related to the main topic. It didn’t hurt me. But my topic was pretty unusual (I think).

I see. I think I will make it secondary to personal experiences when and if I write about it. Thanks.

yeah, it’s a really touchy topic, cause it might either seem like you’re sucking up to them or saying that the way they make admissions decisions is wrong. unless you’re a great writer and write about affirmative action without causing either effect.

Why would you consider writing an essay about a subject you need to research? It doesn’t strike me as a good idea from that standpoint alone.

I suppose they are examining many of these essays primarily to get a feel for your “writing skills” and your ability to express ideas coherently. So if one is able to write about a topic skillfully and, as others have noted, it relates to you and your experience, then go for it.

…But there’s no reason to overtly p*ss people off in the process.

Just some ideas :)

Affirmitive action isn’t a very good topic for a college essay. However, you can try to change the essay abit and talk about diversity in a POSITIVE fashion, which is a good topic.

But most of all, write about something that you are passionate about, but use your head as to which topics are wise and which are not.

More than anything, colleges seem to be looking for people with a passion. [Not that writing an essay about affirmative action means you have this “passion”.]

If you chose to write a well reasoned essay either supporting it or against it, and it is clearly something you are knowledgeable about (and have hopefully done some EC relating to), then it could certainly be a plus in your favor. However, it takes skill to present effectively.

No one ever changes the world being politically correct.

Well, almost never.

EDIT: Woah I did not see that above post above before writing this!

it’s ok oi8u4lunch, great minds think alike.
