Is it better to follow a specific topic for the essay on the common App. to show the coherency of your writing??

Also does the writing have to be something detailed…w/imagery and all that stuff or just simple writing that conveys some moral to the story kind of thing?

I agree with SBR. Even just little details in a story to make it more visual can make something come alive and create a more engaging essay. Don’t try to move too far beyond your writing style, if your style isn’t flowery or full of long descriptions.

Adcoms are not looking for “moral-to-the-story” fable-like tales. Obviously, your essay must be coherent and stick to one topic. Use clear, concise language (make every word count - you only get 500!). Make it interesting, but not “flowery.”
