Essay Discussion Thread

For discussions and questions about the application essays

Hi! Thank you for creating this thread! Has anyone wrote the 3 words essay of SAO?

My daughter did that one last year. First, she brainstormed the three words and then she tried to find other, more unique and specific words to get the same idea across. For example, one of her words was “kind”, which is not unique, but is a very good word to describe a core element of who she is. So she brainstormed what makes her kind (actions, thoughts, goals, etc) and other words to represent kindness and used those efforts to find a more unique word.

What do you think is more important: content (topic/uniqueness/character) or skill (writing/grammatical, vocabulary)? I struggle with the latter :sob: but I think I’m all right with the former.

I’m applying through gateway, but what are the differences between gateway and SAO?

Wanted to ask the same question.
@mirroballing what is the 3 words essay btw?
do we get to answer different questions through application websites even for the same school ?

I was doing something similar to that actually, the words are choose are like methaphors but related to my ECs.

I think the topic, uniqueness and character; however it needs to be well written (no mistakes)

You can apply to every school using the same essays! Although some schools has supplmentals.

The 3 word is essay is to describe yourself using 3 words (but the full essays is between 200-250 words).
You apply to every school with same essays.

Would an essay would my grandparents raising me as a kid work better than a creative essay about rain?

What does each essay tell about your character to an AO?

The rain one talks about my determination through cross-country and the obstacles I overcame. It’s kind of like a metaphor. The first one is about compassion and never judging a book by its cover, if that makes any sense.

Whichever one presents you as a person the best. I really can’t say.

okay thanks!

For those applying to Loomis, regarding the short answer question about something AO’s will not learn from our app, is it okay with I put some additional extracurricular/achievements in there? It seems like the AO’s are digging for some more personal factors but I can’t find a designated additional info section and I want to add some more info.

Essays aren’t supposed to be an achievements list but if you’re basing the essay kind of around the extracurricular/achievements section then that would be fine. I wouldn’t do it out of that circumstance through.

I think putting additional information in a resume or something would be best.

Sorry, I meant a short answer/essay that Loomis has asking about “something they won’t learn from my application”. I was guessing they meant something characteristic wise but I really wanted to include a new activity I was doing so I was wondering if including an extracurricular instead would be weird.

Hey! The Hotchkiss short responses can be less serious and more fun/ironic or they need to be serious and more “professional”?
