Prompt: What motivates people to change?

A trade ship in the middle of the Atlantic is on route to the Caribbean. Transporting sugar cane, the ship suddenly switched directions, and heads north for the Floridian coast. What caused the ship to change directions? The environment. Just as the trade winds can change the direction of a ship, so the influence of one’s surroundings can change decisions of any sort. As seen in Lorraine Hansberry’s classic play, A Raisin in the Sun, and my change of heart regarding my continuation in Cross Country, surroundings help spur along change.

Walter, the main character in Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun changes his mind about moving to Clybourne Park after him family urges him to. Walter’s mother decides that it would best for the whole family to move outside Chicago’s projects. he goes out one day and buys the house without letting anyone know. It turns out that house is located in Clybourne Park, a predominantly white neighborhood - a major problem for an African American family living in the 1920’s. Walter initially rejects his mother’s idea to move to Cylbourne Park. He is persuaded by not only his mother, but also his sister and his wife, to move the family to the safer neighborhood. After Mr. Linder, from the neighborhood improvement agency at Clybourne Park, informs Walter of the dissention of many of the Caucasian homeowners, Walter decides to ignore society, and do the best thing for his family by moving. I, myself experienced a change of heart similar to that of Walter.

I influenced to quit Cross Country after my parent continually badgered me to quit it. I had been a part of the team for the last two years, and with a loaded Junior year approaching, I was under pressure to quit. I had no desire to stop my passion initially, but my mother’s logic made sense, and I eventually heeded her advice.

Just as the trade ship changes its course because of the environment, so did Walter and I, though not because of the environment in such a literal sense.
