Anger and instability are like a foot a sock. The sock is the mask for the layer of instability underneath. In both history and literature, a persons anger and hatred arises from fear and instability.
The infamous Tsar Nicholas I. ruled 1830 in Russia he had just assumed the throne from his heirless brother Tsar Alex. This assumption, however, did not come without a fight. The year before, 1929, Nicolass cousin, Constantine who was more popular with the serfs and nobles, also vied for the throne. For over 3 months, Russia broke out into constant wars until Constantine was finally captured at The Battle of Bosworth and immediately executed. This, however, was not the end of Nicholas problems. Upon Nicholas coronation, part of the Russian army refused to tolerate such an uprising and the faction was massacred. For many years thereafter, Nicholas rule was led by his fear of another revolt. He led his country with an iron fist, never sympathetic toward any cause. During his reign, over 1 million innocent people were convicted of conspiracy against the throne and killed. Tsar Nicholas anger toward his country was of his fear for an uprising.
Similarly, in the book, A Separate Peace, by John Knowles, Gene shares the same anger and hated as Tsar Nicholas. Genes best friend, Finny, is best at sports. He won the sportsman honorary Trophy in 9th grade, the McCallisters football MVP trophy in 10th and even set a new school swimming record without any previous practice. Gene, on the other hand, is the best academically. He never revives bellows 90s on any of his tests and all his teachers love him. At the rate that Gene is studying, he will probably be Valedictorian. Gene, however, does not see accomplishments, but rather focuses on Finnys. With every success of Finnys Gene secretly builds up more and more resentment, until finally, he hates Finny for being so talented. This anger festers on Genes mind until he finally releases by pushing Finny from a tree branch. Finny breaks his leg and his sports career is over. Genes anger, which eventually ruined Finny, was because of Genes insecurity that someone was better than he was.
Throughout literature and history, peoples anger arises from their fear and insecurity. Whether it is a fear of revolt or someone being better, fear is always the driving force behind anger.
