I have a question regarding the introduction on the SAT essay and would really appreciate you help.

So I want to begin with the words :
As a Russian novelist, regarded as one of the greatest of all time, Leo
Tolstoy once proclaimed, ‘…’.

Would it be grammatically correct to say it that way. Is it appropriate to use such strong words as ‘one of the greatest’ etc. on the essay?

“The Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy, who is regarded …, once proclaimed …” would be stronger
