Isaac Newton once wrote, “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” Whose work would you most like to continue in your lifetime and why?

Ok, I really wanted to write this essay on a famous opera singer, Maria Callas. She’s amazing to me buuut her work isn’t really something that I personally would like to continune because I’m not an opera singer or anything…do you guys think I could still write about her? Or say something like “If I was a singer…”

I’m not doing that essay but I HIGHLY doubt that anyone applying would want to share their person with their “competition.” Just a hunch though. ;-)

well i already have someone in mind and it’s not like i’m gonna copy someone else’s idea. people here share essays all the time, i don’t see how that’s different

well, it’s kind of strange to ask what essays your competitors are writing. a lot of people would not feel comfortable answering that type of question.

I’m NOT applying to Northwestern (I don’t have the scores or grades) but I did consider it. I thought I saw on their admissions website some examples of good essays; one was about a girl on a beach. I wanted to take another look, but I can’t navigate there. Does anyone know the link?

If you’re set on writing on this singer, you could simply refer to her “work” in broader terms until you find something you can relate to. To touch the world through music? To continue the art of opera? To bring opera to a new audience? To create inspiring art of any type?

Just be sure it relates to WHO YOU ARE. You could write your entire essay on how awesome this singer is, but that won’t interest the admissions officers who are trying to see how awesome you are. The real purpose of this question is to reveal what you would most like to accomplish and who inspires you. If the entire strength of your essay is that you have an obscure source of inspiration, it won’t even get a second glance. Better to write about Beetoven or Einstein or another well-known figure but focus on your goals.
