Im planning to write my common app essay about effectively changing school policy by using statistics and then making suggestions to eventually persuading the school board, but this is too broad. Should I talk about applying statistics to a practical situation, my negotiation with the school board, or how I saw a problem and investigated it? There are so many different aspects, but I want to hone in a single effective experience.

Why can’t you do all three?

Start with talking about how you saw a problem and were moved to fix it, then go into how you took the initiative and did some statistical analyses, and then go on to how you proposed/negotiated with the school board based upon your findings.

Lastly, and most importantly, go on to say what you learned from the whole experience.

I’ll read it when you’re done if you want.

is there a maximum on how many words to use? the essay says 250 words min.

500 to 750 is about average. The more concise the better.

But don’t be afraid to write more if it’s good writing.
