essay portion - pencil/ink

<p>I didn’t remember anything about it the first time I took the SAT, but I’ve heard from many other students about writing the essay portion in ink. Is it true that it’s required to write the essay in pen/ink? Or is that just recommended?</p>

<p>If it’s true but actually only optional, would you still write the essay in pencil or go for ink?</p>

<p>Pen Cannot Be Used on Essays
A small number of students used pen to write their
SAT essays. Unfortunately, the scanners do not
process essays written in pen, and as a result, these
students received a score of zero on the essay. For
the first three administrations, essays written in
pen were pulled and rescored; however, this is
not an ideal solution, and we will not be able to
continue doing so in the future. We are working
hard to make sure that students know to use No. 2,
soft-lead pencils only on all sections of the SAT
Answer Sheet.
☛ Please reaffirm for students that the entire
test requires a No. 2 pencil. Pen should
never be used on the SAT Answer Sheet.</p>
