<p>Can someone read my first personal statement and give me feedback? </p>
<p>I intend to study communications as a major because it is an interdisciplinary major. It obtains its knowledge by analyzing different fields from a interpersonal level to a mass level, by drawing heavily from subjects such as psychology, sociology, and political science. I discovered my interest in communications after taking numerous psychology courses and realizing that the aspect of psychology that I loved was the communication. Without communication these fields would lack an understanding of their subject. For example, in sociology we study the differences of behavior across cultures, such as in the United States, men and women may hold hands and kiss, where as in Indonesia kissing or touching the opposite sex is considered porn-oxy, which can lead to a fine or imprisonment. In psychology we try to understand why individuals act the way they do. Lastly in political science we analyze the importance of media within politics and how it drives an election to a partys favor.<br>
After taking courses within political science I have become enthralled with the medias control of elections and daily life. I am eager to learn more about mass communication and the effects it has on individuals as well as society as a whole.
As a transfer student majoring in communication studies I believe that it is exceptionally important to already possess good communicative skills to build upon, especially in upper courses such as forensics. I would like to take this opportunity to point out some of the factors that have contributed to my communication skills including: colorguard, girl scouts, and work experience.
When performing a show, communication is key. I say this as a former captain, and as a member of my high school colorguard team. As a captain you need to learn how to effectively lead your team and motivate them. During a show, when something went wrong such as a music malfunction, it was good communication that allowed the team to get back on track. Communication came in different forms such as verbal instruction, body positioning, and hand gestures.
Through out junior high and highschool I began giving back to my community through girlscouts. For a few weeks I volunteered at an elderly care facility where many of the residents could barely talk or hear. To understand the residents needs I had to watch for eye glances and listen for guttural tones. From learning to communicate through different ways I became a more perceptive person, which allows me to communicate with a wider array of people.
While working in different job industries I have learnt the proper communication tools and conduct. For movie theatres you have a repeated greeting for each guest where as in the retail industry there is no set script. Working in retail has helped me to become a more outgoing individual by forcing interaction with numerous people on a daily basis. By bringing me out of my metaphorical shell the retail industry allowed me to be able to express my opinions.<br>
In closing, I hope that through this brief statement I have effectively used my skills to convey my understanding or the major and my passion for the field.</p>
