Essay - Thoughts?

In response to this essay prompt:
Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you.

To his World War II veterans, he was known as Crash. To the American citizens, his initials, JFK, stand for one of the greatest men in American history. Under his leadership, Kennedy inspired a nation with hope through his brilliance in domestic and foreign affairs with his remarkable leadership. Whenever Kennedy took the podium, everyone stopped to watch because of the “Kennedy aura” he brought to the stage. They believed every word he said, because he had the gifted personality and skills to forward his agenda with anyone in the world. Politics today is now connotated with dirty, covert actions filled with smear campaigns and Washington becoming a place of inefficiency, drastic opposites to the principles of Kennedy. After Kennedy was assasinated, the clean, organized White House was taken over by aspiring politicians who were unable to forward their agendas, due to their futile attempts at increasing popularity. When hope rose through the gifted Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, we failed to rise together as a nation when faced with the 9/11 crisis of 2001.

In the speech titled “A Time for Choosing,” by Ronald Reagan, he stated that “You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children… the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness.” Unfortunately, we have taken that first step into a thousand of years of darkness.

American patriotism has taken a step back from the pedestal of greatness in the world of Mother Earth. The new generation of politicians, led by President Obama, bring an old thesis of politics led by Kennedy: there is no left or right, but only an up or down. I have unequovically supported youth advocacy in politics ever since my introduction in 6th grade to youth politics due to this thesis. Youth politics is a testament to an old adage of strength: united we stand, divided we fall.

In Kennedy’s inaugural address, he famously declared: “And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.” Democracy is founded upon what the people want through their government. Society’s growing flaw today is that we sit back and believe everything will come to us, a theory that has led America down the path of recession. Winston Churchill once said, “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.”

We are a young country, but we have taken the first step into a thousand year’s darkness. We need a leader in the White House who can pierce the fog of party boundaries and pound a message to the American people: your voices will be heard. Martin Luther King, Jr’s “I Have a Dream” speech was founded upon the principles of joining together.

The basic principles of some of the greatest orators in the history of this nation have been forgotten. The unimaginable has become the possible, as they are starting to be washed away into the books of history. King, Kennedy, Reagan, President Roosevelt, Robert Kennedy. Their names used to be stamped into our minds for their revolutionary beliefs and their ability to unite.

We cannot just sit back and watch our nation disintegrate into pieces. The beautiful American flag that waved over Yorktown is still waving today in the name of lady liberty. The Framers are watching down upon to see what we will do next. I am going to make sure we do not let them down.
