Essay Topic! - Biggest Weakness

I was thinking about writing an essay that exposed my biggest weakness, yet highlights - what I hope is one of my most honorable qualities.

The topic would be about how too often I put others before myself. My work and dedication throughout my community and within school sometimes compromise my studies. It’s one of my major faults, I believe in putting others before myself. And in doing so, I lose track of what is most beneficial for me, and I look what towards what’s best for others.

If it’s relevant, I’m applying to the top tier Ivys and Wharton

Any feedback?

The main concern about this is to make sure that you’re not constantly bragging.

Hmm, I think I can see what you might be getting at with this topic. With this topic I wanted to really highlight my inspirations while also adding some humility to the essay to balance out my goals. Do you have anymore feedback?

Here’s how it shouldn’t come across:

In other words: a “weakness” essay often frankly admits a weakness and then explains how the writer overcame it or is overcoming it.

Your concept could come across as disingenuous because it seems that you don’t honestly consider your trait to be a “weakness”. Like any other weakness, are you trying to correct it? Or are you in fact proud of this alleged “weakness”?

If you really want to stick with this, your weakness could be something like “managing my time when I am caught up with a service project I care about.”

I think we could all agree that if you do stuff like this regularly: “sign up to work in the soup kitchen from 8 am to noon, lost track of time and stayed til 3and missed your 2 p.m. calculus test” then it really is a weakness.

Same rule as for all essays: Show, don’t tell. Use interesting anecdotes that reveal things about you. You should touch on what you are doing to correct your weakness.
