Essay topic feedback: Too bland for Ivy League?

Hi everyone-

I’m planning on applying Early Action to Harvard, so I’ve gotten started on my supplemental essay. Harvard’s essay is optional, and is basically wide open in terms of the topic.

I decided to write about my love of reading, starting off with an anecdote about how I would always check out the biggest books I could find when I was younger and talking about how literature has impacted my life. I think the essay shows my love of learning, and is infused with a bit of humor. My only question is, is my topic too boring? I’m sure many of Harvard’s applicants love to read; I’m afraid that my essay topic doesn’t have enough of a “wow” factor. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

On its face, it sounds like a decent topic. Most of it will depend on how well written the essay itself is. If you want me to read it, send me PM and I can provide offline feedback

Many of my friends who applied (and got accepted) to Harvard wrote specifically about how their childhood experiences actually defined their character when they later grew up; from what I’ve heard from them, maybe emphasizing the impacts part of the essay will have more success.
