Essay Topics!

I am definitely writing my Common App essay using the first prompt. It is going to be about being a friendly and optimistic person while living in New York City. Should I choose one of these two options or write both and get my guidance counselor’s opinion on which one to fix up?

  1. Going to a Catholic youth conference in the Midwest and meeting people similar to me; being able to really embrace my true personality
  2. Starting a gardening job and working with two cold, sheltered guys but being able to help them open up, especially since all three of us had little experience
Sorry for being so informal! I’m just in a pinch right now and eager to start my essay. Thank you!

Is writing about being a friendly and optimistic person from NYC one of the choices? Personally, I think the second one sounds like it could be a good window into your character without being explicit about it. I’d draft up both, though; it really depends on the execution.

Are you aiming to write about how your background in New York City has influenced you today? (This way, you are fulfilling what the first prompt question is asking.) I think that the second option sounds more interesting. I think you could write about how starting to garden helped you help others. However, it is really important that your essay and topic correctly answer the Common App prompt. It wouldn’t hurt to just write both. I would pick the one that sounds the best and is the most meaningful to you. (Choose the one that you feel really describes you as a person.)
