I have just started studying for the essay and it’s REALLY HARD for me. I know that it is not top material, but I was wondering if anyone could score it and perhaps give me any advice. Thanks!

Prompt: Is it important to question the decisions of the people in positions of authority?

Essay:

Questioning authority is crucial to ending errors in thought and correcting wrong actions. Both The Help and Galileo’s theories demonstrate this necessity.
The novel The Help focuses on racial barriers in Mississippi from the perspective of fictional house maids. Many of these women are oppressed by their employers; for instance, the colored maids may not use the same restroom as a white woman. Character Skeeter, who opposes this maltreatment, amasses a group of maids. Together, the group compiles a risky book in part discussing several similar injustices to the restroom incident. As the book is published, behaviors change in Mississippi, along with the rest of the nation engaged in the civil right’s movement. House maids are eventually given less petulance and more respect, and this was a result of the questioning of authority the book represented.
Galileo similarly revolutionized thinking in the realm of science, using similar methods. The idea of geocentricity was quite prevalent and accepted during Galileo’s time. However, based on concrete evidence and calculations, he found heliocentricity to reveal the more accurate configuration of the heavens. This led to enriched advancement in science. Thus, in this instance, despite the adversity Galileo may have received, questioning authority proved to be quite important.
After analysis of both The Help and heliocentricity, challenging authority is indeed essential. Without these actions–both in the fictionalized community of the south and in Galileo’s scientific forum–life would not have been as accurate or just; thus, opposing popular inaccurate ideas creates a less difficult and, in a sense, a better world.
