I have a great idea on how to write my essay but I can’t truely develop my special interests and personality because they won’t fit very well in this type of essay writing. Should I choose inovation and disregard my character development or should I do what everyone else does and say what my passions are?

Sorry for being so broad, but I think my idea is really good
and i dont want to take the chance of someone else stealing my idea and apply to the same colleges as i am

“or should I do what everyone else does”

I think that answers your question
You never want to do what everyone else does!

Imagine what it’s like being an admissions counselor and having to read 4,000 essays about how passionate those 4,000 people are about X, Y and Z. All that passion probably starts to seems a little less so!

If you have an interesting way of showing something truly personal, that’s the way to go. Every piece of writing you create is a self-portrait of sorts, so even if you don’t get into the specifics of personality and accomplishment, often you will be saying something about yourself anyway.

Of course, all of this revolutionary thinking and advice is predicated on the fact that you wouldn’t want to be applying to truly conservative schools since you are an original yourself. If the school you’re interested in is more conservative in personality, then I wouldn’t risk it.
